2. For each book we read, I wish we would have kept a short one paragraph summary of the plot, high points, or list of characters. I am especially bad about remembering which Shakespeare story is which as I look back over the list we have read.
3. I wish we had kept a notebook page for EVERY author we read, organized alphabetically in a binder. This would be such a great reference. I also would like to have a list of the books we read for each author, perhaps on the back of the page. Which books by Dickens have we read? Which books by Jane Austen? This would have been helpful.
4. I use LibraryThing to keep track of our home library but I am finding that I have not kept it up-to-date. I really wish I had kept on top of all the ins and outs of books so I could easily find out if I already own a book and it is tucked away on a shelf somewhere. I ended up with duplicate copies of several books this year, what a waste!
I am so sure there are other things but those are the ones that are glaring at me as I plan Mr. B's school year. He is the last of four homeschooling children and by this point things are beginning to blur a little and better records would absolutely have made my job easier.
Hope this helps you in your homeschool planning for the future.

What great "heads-up" pointers for us all!
I made copies of the scheduled readers (their book lists) and a blank book report form in the front of each child's notebook file. They have kept some personal records and stayed on track with their theme studies.
Ok, then. Taking all this to heart as I am planning out and heading into the high school years. Thank you! Also looking into Homeschool Tracker. I will have to get into a habit of keeping more detailed records - daily or weekly. I know you've posted about this before. Will have to read your HT posts again.
I kept a reading log...he lost it....I'm having trouble documenting his English now! There's always "woulda, shoulda, coulda." Relax! You've done an AMAZING job!!
Your reflections are so valuable to me, Barb.
I'm putting finishing touches on plans for 8th grade for my oldest. Ever since I started planning this year (way back when the snow was flying), I've had it in my mind that this would be my practice year for recordkeeping for a transcript. Now I will add in a few extra things based on this post.
Thank you!

Barb, you are such a star! Thank you for giving us your great ideas.
I've got a few years to practice before high school... but my time 'practising' for primary was really necessary, so I'm sure it will be the same for high school, putting things in place to make life go smoother.
God bless.
Thank you for sharing this tip. I heard this twice from veterans at the homeschooling conference this year. They didn't express it quite so specifically, but they did say keep a reading log.
Thank you!! It is my goal to do this and I think we may have to invest in Homeschool Tracker, too!
This summer we purchased an App for the iPod called ReadingLog. Each boy has a log, the books are fairly simple to load. I am going to try to keep it up even after the summer reading program. I have a friend who photocopied the cover and index page of every book that they read, and kept it in a 3 ring binder. She handed it to the "admissions person" at the colleges they wanted to go to and each of her children received admitance and scholarships. ;)
