The upcoming edition of the Charlotte Mason Carnival is focusing on the theme:
Education is an atmosphere....
I have been pondering this idea all week and it finally came to me this afternoon what those words mean in our family.
This atmosphere is not the books, texts, notebook pages, the supplies, or the furniture of our home. The atmosphere is like the air we breathe...invisible, intangible, and yet palpable in the heart.
So many times we dwell on the minutia of our homeschooling and it doesn't occur to us until well along in our homeschooling journey that the atmosphere is the most important aspect of our attempts at educating our children.
I am preparing my children to prepare themselves for whatever their futures hold for them. I cannot look into a magic mirror to see what their adult lives will hold as far as job opportunities, family obligations, their ministry. I aim to prepare them to be great readers and thinkers, people who can self-educate and adapt to what they need to do in order to make their lives fit God's plan for them.
Side thought: I have been thinking about how the world has changed since I graduated from high school and I would have never in my wildest George Jetson dreams thought we would have all the technological gadgets and internet opportunities that we have today. The truth is that when I graduated from high school (over 30 years ago) I was not prepared for the world of 2011. Over the years, I needed to self-educate and keep learning or be left behind. Even my firefighter husband uses technology today that did not even exist back when he graduated from college. He is constantly learning new things and adapting. This is something we need to prepare our children for and this will come from good habits and a true learning atmosphere.
What Does Our Atmosphere Look Like?
I can help them acquire good habits while they live at home. I can stimulate a love for beautiful things and an appreciation for God's creation. I can give them moral guidance with the help of the Bible and great examples from the past and present day. I can expect them to be good communicators in speech and writing. I can make our home a fun and interesting place for them to feel safe and loved and needed. The atmosphere of the home is what nurtures them on the inside and helps shape who they are as they grow.
Something else you might like to read...
A great resource that I have referred to many times in my own personal reading is the Education Is ebook from Simply Charlotte Mason. This is a quick easy read but it will give you lots to work on in your home. Thanks Sonya.
Something else that has had me thinking this week...
If you would like to read a special entry from someone who has caught my attention in the blogging world, pop over to Amy's blog at Raising Arrows and read her entry, Three Attributes for a Happy Family. I really think that the three things she lists are right on target for making an atmosphere of learning and love in a family. Thanks Amy.

I have been reading the same things lately...good stuff.
I'm still waiting for the conveyer belt to take me out my door! ...oh, and the flying cars!
Thanks for the reminder about Sonya's eBook; I try to read through it before every new season of planning!
I've been pondering this, too, Barb. I know I am guilty of concentrating too much on the little things (what a friend calls "majoring in the minors"), and I'm afraid I'm not giving proper attention to cultivating that atmosphere CM advocates. Thank you for the reminder.
Thanks for your wisdom and insights! I absolutely agree with your comments on technology. We all need to learn, adapt and cope with ever-changing technology!
I have always maintained that information can always be learnt, but that education is our "growing in character" and this is also a life-long process.
It seems then, that our job in homeschool is to inspire our children to keep growing and learning and never "graduate"! And if our home atmosphere inspires - we have succeeded!
What a beautiful post... Now that our children are teens I find it's as if not more important to continue with the same foundation we started with. Only they take the reigns more often now. I love Nadine's' comment about anything can be learnt, but education is our growing in character... So true...! Thanks for your note today at Dandelion House Homeschool!
Glad you enjoyed!
Deb
Wonderful post. It seems many of us are thinking about the the same things right now.
Blessings,
Dawn
Thanks Barb! I too want my childrento grow up to be "great readers and thinkers" - to be able to know and recognise truth in an increasingly ungodly world.
And about the technology - I remember as a child watching a news article about how one day we will use our computers to do our shopping - lol!! Little did we know!
You are so correct, Atmosphere IS the most important aspect of our education. So enjoyed reading this:)
I'm a little embarrassed here because I know I should be commenting on your words, but that is a beautiful sky picture! Did you take that yourself? I sit at my computer in the morning as the sun "rises" and if the sky is looking particularly lovely, I grab the camera. On the iciest, chilliest days, I just hang my arm around the storm door and hope for a good shot :)
I agree with the keeping up with technology, but at the same time I feel like I'm so far behind with all that I missed out on learning while in school that I'm also having to backtrack to pick up the missing pieces.
High school graduation for me was also 30+ years ago! Yikes!
Kay
Hi Kay,
Yep, that is my house from the backyard looking east to the sunrise on a winter morning....gorgeous huh?
I am always up early and I usually take the dog outside first thing so I get to witness a lot of sunrises.
Great post, Barb, and interesting thoughts about all the new technology that just wasn't imaginable years ago. Your atmosphere sounds like something we should all strive for.
Godspeed,
Nancy
Thank you so much for what you add to the cm carnival and the online homeschool community! You are an encouragement to many!!
The educating atmosphere, formation in habit... these are the areas I'm concentrating on bettering. I totally agree, Amy's post was excellent, and plan to revisit it.
