Just like I gave up on formal grammar and Latin study, I have now given up on formal poetry memorization.
We still are memorizing poetry but not with the intensity that we did in the last year.
Each son has picked a poem to memorize by skimming through the Poetry Memorization book from IEW.
We copied it off and slipped into a sheet protector for their binders. They work on memorizing a little a day but as part of their literature study. Their schedules do allow for a little time each day on their own to memorize their chosen poems....I decided a little bit was better than nothing at all.
(I don't know how many times I have heard parts of The Charge of the Light Brigade this week.....somebody make it stop.)
Every adapting,

It is tough to "give up" on something, but that is the great thing about homeschooling- we can just call it "adapting". :) Years ago (with now adult children) we tried Latin- we also adapted and tossed it out. Two of my dds eventually took Latin from an outside instuctor for a few years.
We too have lessened out poetry studies. Instead, I've been doing monthly studies, and since we school year round I figure they are still getting a nice amount in. I'm hoping this way it sticks with them a little more than the poem a week we were doing before.
I found your blog at Jimmie's (in China) and I'm SO happy! My oldest is 15, starting 10th grade, and I have been looking for support/examples from other high schooling homeschoolers. My husband has stressed we need to up my son's rather loose schedule which is new for me and our eclectic approach. So, I will be visiting again as I like what I've read on your blog.
Have a good week - Kate
Thanks for the encouragement on our decision. It seems like a good way to compromise with poetry and the memorization. They are still memorizing scriptures so that is another place they are using their memorizing skills.
Kate-Welcome to my blog. :)
We change poems every 6 weeks. That gives us about 6 per year, way more than I received while I was in school, so I think we will be fine. I like using the term adapting also.
We did a lot of poetry memorization when our older children were younger, but then slipped into savoring it as we read ... I guess I'll need to get back to the memorization with the younger ones. Thanks for the reminder.
