| Grade five was a challenge to put together but it has become one of my favorite years of all the grades offered. Following the Well-Trained Mind and Tapestry of Grace history cycles, I compiled the fifth grade year to cover the ancient period of history. I chose to cover general topics and those include the prehistoric, Egyptian, Roman, and Greek periods of art. The music plan is designed around the book Story of the Orchestra and a study of the various instruments of the orchestra. Sample Grade Five Plan There are three options for art to choose from: Option one for art appreciation provides internet links to view the various artwork from the time period covered. Here are a few samples of the links included: Ice Age Art Egyptian Art Classical Greek Art Option two for art appreciation is based on books in the Art in History series. The books are scheduled out in the Harmony Fine Arts plan along with review questions and optional art activities to follow-up the readings. This option also includes Dover Publication coloring books that correspond to the ancient period of history. Option three is a plan for using Artistic Pursuits grades 4-6 Book 1. I realize that this book in itself is a whole art curriculum but for those of us that need a schedule I have included a week by week plan for covering the book in a year. You can add this option with either option one or two and have a really great art program. The fifth grade plan for music appreciation includes reading Story of the Orchestra with the CD that accompanies it, along with various CDs that feature instruments from the classical orchestra. For a complete list of the CDs used with the music appreciation plan, you can view the materials page on Harmony Fine Arts. As you will find with each of the years in Harmony Fine Arts, you can pick and choose which options to use at any time. You can use your own resources or those from the library. There are plenty of options that you can use with the internet. The plan can also be used with children that are younger in your family if you desire to keep your whole family together for art and music appreciation. Full instructions are included along with materials lists and an art supply list.
