Harmony Fine Arts: Grade Three

grade three

Grade Three has some interesting options for studying the third year cycle for history as outlined in The Well-Trained Mind. This time period is the 1600s to the 1850s and you can find all the plan's year cycles here in the overview chart. The third grade time span roughly covers from the Baroque period of art to the Romantic period of art.

You can check out a sample plan for weeks 1-4. A list of the resources used gives you an idea of which artists and composers are covered in this 32 week long plan.

Here are some more details that will help you decide if the third grade plan is right for your family.

Option one for art appreciation schedules artists to view along with suggested artwork to look up online with the links that are provided in the plan. Some of the artists included are Jan Vermeer, Jean-Honore Fragonard, and Diego Velazquez. In all, there are 8 artists studied in the third grade plan using option one.

Option two for art appreciation uses popular art appreciation books that many will find at their public library. Two books from the Come Look with Me series and two books from the How Artists See series are the foundation for this option in grade three. While this option does not stick as closely to the time period covered as option one, it is very enjoyable and includes short follow up activities to each day's reading.

Option three for art in grade three has a little twist to it. Grade three combines the history time period with the science topic of the year, chemistry, as suggested in The Well-Trained Mind. Based on the book Science Arts, your family will complete activities that are connected to the theme of chemistry and are still considered art. Each week also has one of Dover Publications' coloring books planned out to go along with your history time period. You can see which topics are covered on the materials page of Harmony Fine Arts.

Finally, music appreciation in grade three is based on the book and CD Stories of the Great Composers Book 1. Some of the composers that you will listen to are Bach, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Debussy, and Rachmaninoff. In all, you will listen to 11 composers in the third grade if you follow the Harmony Fine Arts plan.

I hope this gives you a clearer picture of what is covered and included in Harmony Fine Arts. This plan was written to be flexible for your family. Although each year has a grade attached to it, you can move up or down the years to fit your family's history time period. You can also combine all your children into one year plan if you wish.

Please email me with any questions or if you need help deciding which year plan to order.

Enjoy,
